The first Labor Day

was organized in September 1882 by the unions of New York City to celebrate their members being in unions, and to show support for all unions.

Matthew Maguire,

a machinist, and Peter McGuire, a carpenter are both credited with that first New York City event

President Grover Cleveland

made Labor Day a Federal Holiday by signing it into law on June 28, 1894.

before the Congress passed Labor Day as a national holiday; the state of Oregon was the first to observe Labor Day as a statewide holiday
